Federation of Uganda Football Associations, FUFA has confirmed that midfielder Tonny Mawejje will be accorded a standing ovation in the 6th minute of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League match between Vipers SC and Police FC at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende on Saturday.

“In the 6th minute, the referee will temporarily stop the game to accord a standing ovation by all players and fans to Police FC Captain @TonnyMawejje who is retiring from competitive football. Play will resume thereafter,” FUFA revealed using their verified Twitter account.

FUFA said league organisers UPL and all stakeholders had been notified of this development.

The Police FC captain early this week reaffirmed his earlier announcement that he’s retiring from competitive football to join coaching but mostly, at his soccer academy which he said will be launched soon.

Mawejje has spent at least 20 years playing football at different clubs including teams outside Uganda as National team, the Cranes. And in most of these teams, he has been donning jersey 6 hence the nickname ‘TM6’.

It’s upon this background that the country’s soccer governing body decided to honour him with a standing ovation on six minutes during the last game of his career.

He however bows out on low note following his side’s relegation from the topflight league after 27 years.

Relatedly,a guard of honour will be given to champions elect Vipers SC by visitors Police, the Uganda Premier League has announced.

The Venoms will be crowned on Saturday having been declared champions of Uganda for the fifth time already.
