Police in Kampala have arrested two people in connection with a fire which gutted the national stores of the Ministry of Agriculture in Wandegeya on Sunday morning.

Unquantified items including chemicals, drugs, pesticides, animal sperms fridges & other inputs have been destroyed. The fire is suspected to have sparked from rubbish which was being burnt nearby.

“The territorial Police at Wandegeya has today 3/04/2022 registered a fire outbreak at the Ministry of Agriculture stores located along Buganda Road.
The fire broke out at about 11am. Our fire prevention and rescue services responded at the scene on time and are currently dealing with the situation,” Mr Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan police said in a statement.

Although the real cause of the fire is still under investigation, police say preliminary information gathered has linked it to the negligence of the storekeepers.

It has been established that the storekeepers always burn rubbish every Sunday and it is suspected the wind could have blown the fire inside the store since the burning point is close to the stores.

The arrested persons have been Identified as Ajambo Jerry and Namusimbi Eunice, both cleaners at the facility and according to Owoyesigyire, they will help police during investigations.
