One killed as police battle suspected city criminal gangs

Police in Kampala Wednesday shot and killed a suspected criminal during an operation conducted by the Flying Squad Unit together with the Directorate of Crime Intelligence.

The intelligence -led operation carried out in the areas of Kisenyi near Link Bus terminal, police said was focused on “thugs who knock down their victims before robbing them of their Money and Electronic devices.”

According to the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the man who was put out of action was only identified as Alipanda. He said exhibits including 20 mobile phones, ATM cards and IDs of different nationals suspected to have been robbed, were recovered from their base of operation.

It is alleged that the task teams met a lot of resistance while arresting Alipanda and a bullet was discharged by one of the officers injuring him. He later succumbed to his injuries on the way to Mulago hospital. His body was later conveyed to city mortuary Mulago while investigations into the shooting incident have also commenced.

Owoyesigyire noted that they had received sufficient information which suggested which linked Alipanda to robberies that happened last week along Buganda Road of seven million Uganda shillings and other devices, the incident of rape and robbery that happened in a home of a female adult in Kayunga.

He added that the deceased also led a group that robbed Abdallah Wanda of shs 16 million at Mini Price in Kampala. Alipanda was also accused of masterminding his escape and other 17 suspects at Jinja CPS.
“The group is big and the hunt is still on with the aim of arresting all the gang members,” Owoyesigyire said.

Items like phones worth 2.8m and a Laptop were robbed from him. A video that was captured by the Turkish Embassy cameras has since gone viral.

Police yesterday said they had arrested the four people believed to have taken part in these separate incidents. The suspects have been identified as Abdullamani Bakata alias Pancho , Nsubuga Emmanuel , Wanandya Agustine and Muwanda Ivan .
