The territorial Police at Kawempe are investigating circumstances under which a ninety year-old woman was burnt to death in her place of residence.
The deceased has been identified as Nanfuka Getrude, a resident of Kanyogoga- Kawanda Central zone Nabweru Division in Wakiso district.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan police, the incident took place on Tuesday (March 1,2022) at about 9pm.
“The woman was burnt beyond recognition and police are suspecting Arson,” Owoyesigyire said.
Nanfuka’s 12-year granddaughter who has been staying with her told detectives that the old lady asked her to sleep in the living room something that was unusual, as it had never happened before.
Nanfuka then locked herself in the bedroom, and they both slept off.
However, when the child woke up, her grandmother’s room was on fire.
She safely escaped danger before making an alarm which attracted the neighbors who helped extinguish the fire, but unfortunately Nanfuka was already dead.
“The fire mostly affected Nanfukas bedroom.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire,” Owoyesigyire noted.
The deceased’s body has been taken to city mortuary Mulago.
