Dr Baterana Byarugaba, the Executive Director of Mulago National Referral Hospital, has been arrested by the State House Health Monitoring Unit.
Media reports quoting the Unit head, Dr. Warren Namara, said the arrest was intended to follow-up on investigations into the mismanagement of the hospital.
“We are querying mismanagement of resources, medicines and equipment at the hospital. As the head of the hospital, he is responsible and we invited him to help us with the ongoing investigations mid last month,” Dr Namara said.
Namara said they were forced to arrest the Executive Director for failing to honour their summons.
Early February 2022, four people were arrested over allegations of embezzling Shs20.5b at the hospital.
President Yoweri Museveni appointed Dr Byarugaba to replace Dr. Edward Ddumba. This followed investigations into corruption allegations and mismanagement by the Health Monitoring Unit.
As he was being ushered in, Dr Byarugaba promised to improve services at the National Referral Hospital and fight the excruciating corruption at the institution.
