School fire kills one in Kampala

Mathew Amanya, a Primary six pupil was confirmed dead following a fire outbreak in a dormitory at Good times Infant Nursery and Primary School Kawaala that was housing P.6 and P.7 pupils last night.

One pupil was confirmed dead at Good Times Infant Primary School in Kawaala, Rubaga Division – Kampala, after fire gutted one of the school dormitories.

The unfortunate incident took place at about 12:15 am on Monday night in the dormitory at Olupot “B” Block, which housed male pupils of classes from P.4 to P.7.


In a statement, Police said the children escaped through the front and back doors.

“Unfortunately, Amanya Mathew, an 11-year-old primary six pupil was left inside as he was fast asleep. He was burnt beyond recognition,” KMP Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said.

“The Police Fire Prevention and rescue services responded and put down the fire. The deceased’s remains were conveyed to city mortuary Mulago,” Owoyesigire added.

Investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire have since commenced.
