Wakiso Giants Wednesday inflicted the first 2021/22 Uganda Premier League defeat on SC Villa with a 1-3 victory at Kavumba Recreation Centre.

A brace and a goal for Titus Ssematimba and Moses Aliro respectively in the first half meant Wakiso Giants have now won all their three games since coach Alex Gitta took over from Douglas Bamweyana. Bamweyana resigned his position after their first two league matches.

For the new Villa coach Petros Koukouras, it was his first competitive loss in two games played so far.

The Purple Sharks announced their intentions early in the game when Ssematimba put them ahead on nine minutes thanks for Edward Satulo’s pass.

Eleven minutes later, Moses Aliro doubled the visitors’ lead before Ssematimba completed his brace in the 24th minute.

As the two sides went into the break, Wakiso Giants led 0-3 and had their hope of defeating the Jogoos for the first time ever in sight.

In the second half however, Villa exhibited a much improved performance which was ignited by Wakiso’s reluctance in going forward.

And with the introduction of new faces into the team, Villa finally looked lively. Consequently, a foul on substitute Travis Mutyaba by Fahad Kawooya resulted into a penalty just over the hour mark.
Goalkeeper Derrick Emukule denied Umar Lutalo but the latter was the quickest to react and scored on rebound.

Lutalo’s goal was however only good for a consolation

The win takes Wakiso Giants to nine points and 4th in the table after five games. Despite starting poorly in the season, the Purple Sharks are just four points behind leaders KCCA FC (13).

Villa on the other hand, are 14th with three points from two games.

In their next fixture,Koukouras and his boys will most probably have a tougher task as they take a trip to Wankulukuku to face perennial rivals Express FC on November 20.

For Wakiso Giants, they host Tooro United on Friday, November 19, 2021.
