Uganda’s basketball star forward Ishmail Wainwright has joined NBA side Phoenix Suns on a two-year contract. This comes just less than a week after leaving the Toronto Raptors.
Wainwright is the first Ugandan to join the NBA.
The 27-year-old was part of the Uganda Silverbacks team that did not only finish 6th at the Afro basket 2021 in Kigali Rwanda but also beat star-studded Nigeria.
Wainwright had a solid season in 2021 posting 11.6 points and 4.6 rebounds for while playing for SIG Strasbourg which pulled the attention of the Toronto Raptors. The Canada based team signed Wainwright on a two-year contract on August 7, 2021, before they dropped him on Sunday, October 17 to help the team get NBA’s maximum roster size of 15 players.
Wainwright shared his excitement on his socials. “Blessed to be a part of the Phoenix Suns family. Time to work,” he tweeted.
Phoenix Suns are an American Professional basketball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. Phoenix Suns are a member of the league’s Western Conference in the Pacific Conference and host their games from Footprint Center. The 58-year old team has won the Western conference on three different occasions 1976, 1993 and recently 2021 however they eventually lost the NBA finals to Milwaukee Bucks.
