Police confirms Ssegirinya’s re- arrest, reveals place of detention, new charges

The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the re- arrest of Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya.

According to Fred Enanga, the force spokesperson, Ssegirinya was arrested by the joint security task team on charges of treason and inciting violence.

“We want to inform the public that Hon Ssegirinya Mohammad has also been rearrested on fresh charges of treason and incitement to violence by the joint security task team of investigators,” Enanga said Monday evening.

“He has been transferred to the Special Investigations Division, in Kireka for further statement recording and action,” Enanga further revealed.

The MP who had just been released on bail from Kigo prison, was grabbed out of his lawyer Shamim Malende’s car by ruthless and mean looking gun wielding men before being driven away.

Malende who looked frightened, told reporters that her car had been chased by security vehicles from the gates of the prison until where they were condoned off. She said she was driving at a high speed to at least reach where media personnel had been cut off.

According to Erias Lukwago, one of Ssegirinya’s lawyers, another MP Allan Ssewanyana who was as well re-arrested on Thursday is charged for a fourth count of murder.

“I have finally managed to speak to Hon. Allan Ssewanyana at the office of the I.O Det. ASP Matanzima at SIU Kireka, where he had been transferred for purposes of recording a new statement following his abduction and detention incommunicado. He has been charged with a new count of Murder, bringing the total number of counts to seven; 4 of murder, attempted murder, Terrorism and abetting Terrorism,” Lukwago revealed on Monday evening.

In the new charge, it’s alleged that on the 4th day of August 2021, Ssewanyana killed a one Bwanika Joseph of Kisekka B Village, Kankamba Parish, Lwengo District.

“He remained in their custody and they were cagey on the next course of action. We had earlier on filed an application for habeas corpus which is pending hearing,” Lukwago said.
