Five players who have been with the Uganda Cranes in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia have been told to return to Kampala. Midfielder Tadeo Lwanga(Injury), Martin Kizza, Shafik Kuchi Kagimu, Abdu Lumala and Kenneth Ssemakula were all released on Monday afternoon.
The team which has since departed for capital Addis Ababa aboard Ethiopian Airlines, is expected to leave for Nairobi, Kenya tonight ahead of their Group E Fifa World Cup qualifier on September 2, 2021.
Fufa said they had sent an advance team to Nairobi and their head Paul Mukatabala would be at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive the Ugandan contingent.
While in Nairobi, three more players; Isaac Muleme (Viktoria Žižkov, Czech Republic), Mustapha Kizza (CF Montréal, Canada), and Derrick Nsibambi (Smouha, Egypt) are expected to join the team in Nairobi.
Before flying to Addis Ababa, Milutin Sredojevic ‘Micho’ the head coach told media that he was optimistic his side would perform well despite losing 2-1 to Ethiopia on Sunday in an international build up game.
“The time in Ethiopia has helped us a lot to acclimatize to the weather, like is in Nairobi and also give the players competitive match experience. We expect a good game against Kenya,” Micho said.
After the match against Kenya on Thursday, 2nd September 2021, Uganda will host Mali four days later at the St Mary’s stadium in Kitende.
Neighbors Rwanda are the other team in group.
