The Uganda Cranes interim coach Abdallah Mubiru has explained why he and the technical team appointed Emmanuel Okwi as the new team skipper. Okwi replaced goalkeeper Denis Onyango who has since retired from the national team.
While speaking to Fufa website on Friday, Mubiru said Okwi was considered for captaincy over the rest because of mainly experience.
” We appointed him as the captain of Uganda Cranes based on experience, discipline and a role model,” Mr Mubiru said.
Mubiru added that the striker is also disciplined, humble and can bring together both the young and seniors at the team.
“Okwi is committed and a winner always. He settles for nothing but a win. He will always try to do anything possible to make sure the team wins. He is also down to earth and relates very well with the young and senior players.
The coach also explained the status of Okwi’s assistant(s).
“We are yet to announce the assistants which will be a committee of three to four captains with the head captain who will handle some issues. As head coach I can always handle bigger issues,” he added.
Uganda take on South Africa on 10th June,2021 in an international friendly match.
To prepare for the trip, Mubiru named a 34 man Squad that enters residential camp on Sunday at Cranes Paradise Hotel-Kisaasi.
