Rukia Naiga has become the first ever pool player to be crowned as overall Ugandan sports personality of the month by the Uganda Sports Press Association.
Rukia who beat World champion and athletics world record holding Super star Joshua Cheptegei to emerge winner for January, was crowned at a quarterly dinner organized by Uspa at the Imperial Royale Hotel on Wednesday.
Rukia beat teammate Ritah Nimusiima by 9-1to win the East and Southern Africa pool championships.
Prior to the tournament however, Rukia missed the team trip to Lusaka, Zambia due to a delay in her Covid 19 test results.
When the results finally came out, she traveled alone for 4 days on the road. She developed fatigue and Malaria along the way, to the effect that she was hospitalised after collapsing during the first round of the championship.
The organisers accepted to postpone the continuation of her match as her opponent led 5-3, racing to 7.
Upon discharge the following day, she recovered to win the following games to win the match 7-5.
The Ntinda Giant player would later, miraculously overcome all her remaining opponents who included African champion and top seed Nicola Roseau, who hadn’t lost any competitive match in 5 years.
Meanwhile, Badminton Player Usna Kobugabe won the month of February award while Derrick Kakooza was crowned as March’s best.
The Uganda Under 20 national soccer player was top scorer at the 2021 Afcon U-20 finals in Mauritania.
On top of the awards, the trio were also given Uganda shillings 500,000 courtesy of Uspa’s partners and sponsors Nile special.
