Rwanda: Head of football governing body resigns

Federation of Rwanda Football Association( FERWAFA) President Rtd Brig Gen SEKAMANA Jean Damascène Wednesday said he had resigned from his office.

In the letter written to members of the FERWAFA General Assembly, Gen Sekamana said “This [football work] requires me to do it as a normal daily routine. I find that combining it with my other personal responsibilities would have a negative impact on the development of football. ”

General Sekamana took over from Nzamwita Vincent in 2018 after 45 out of the 53 voters supported him while 7 voted for his rival and former referee Louis Rurangirwa with one vote turning out to be invalid.

During his tenure, the national team of Rwanda, Amavubi Stars reached their second quarter finals of the African Championship (Chan) before losing 1-0 to Guinea in a tense match played in Limbe, Cameroon.

The other time they had done the same was in 2016 when the tournament took place on home soil in Kigali.

The former Kiyovu FC president whose term of office would expire in April next year, thanked his former Assembly for their confidence in him and for the cooperation they showed during his leadership.

 
Among the members of Gen Sekamana’s former executive committee were: Vice president Habyarimana Matiku Marcel, Kankindi Alida Lise – head of Finance, Rwankunda Quita -head of marketing and, Mukangoboka Christine who has been in charge of women football.
