Watenga makes Chippa United debut, beaten by Onyango

Uganda international goalkeeper Ismail Watenga has made his debut at Chippa United FC as his side lost 2-1 at home against Denis Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns today at the Sisa Dukashe stadium.

Themba Zwane converted a penalty after Riaan Hanamub brought down Modiba inside the box to put Sundowns in the lead just after 16 minutes.


In the 49th minute Augustine Kwem levelled the matters for Chippa United.

Debutant Watenga was forced to make a great save in the 71st minute to deny Peter Shalulile a chance to make it 2-1 for the visitors.

However, three minutes later Shalulile eventually beat Watenga to give Sundowns all the 3 points.

Onyango who is also Watenga’s senior and captain at the national team level, was in goal for Masandawana.

Watenga was at Sundowns last year before he joined Chippa United on a 19 month loan in Pursuit for playing time.

The former Vipers goalie has however been playing second choice behind Ayanda Mtshali untill today when he made his long awaited debut for Chippa United.

The loss means , Chippa are now 15th with 17 points from 22 games while Mamelodi Sundowns are table leaders with 46 points from 20 games.

Chippa United will visit Pretoria Callies on Saturday 17th April 2021 in Nedbank Cup while Mamelodi Sundowns visit Orlando Pirates on Thursday 15th April, 2021
