Police FC moved top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League temporarily at least, after a 3-1 win over Kyetume on Friday at the MTN OMONDI Stadium in Lugogo.
The game was delayed for over 30 minutes due to the heavy down pours. When the kick off whistle was finally blown, the visitors looked more threatening than the hosts and had their first attempt at goal as early as the second minute when Ezira Bida’s effort from outside the box easily ended up in Derrick Ochan’s safe hands.
However, it was Police who celebrated first when they scored with their first shot on target. Winger Johnson Odongo’s weak shot from outside the box in the 20th minute somehow found its way into the back of the net after goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa was caught unaware.
Few moments later, Kyetume wasted an incredible chance to level matters after Sharif Saaka agonizingly failed to direct Ezra Bida’s brilliant pass.
Police extended their lead in the 35th minute when Odong turned Richard Matovu inside out and powerfully shot towards the kyetume goal. Mutakubwa parried the shot back into play and Muwadda Mawejje reacted fast to extend the cops’ lead.
With just three minutes to halftime , Kyetume pulled a goal back through Baker Buyala.
And thus, the game went into the the break with the home team leading 2-1.
Police could have extended their advantage early in the second half but Odongo failed to connect well with Ruben Kimera’s delightful cross from the left.
In the 70th minute, Police’s Henry Katongole almost gifted the slaughters an equalizer but Ochan was up to the task and made sure the cops remained on top.
Three minutes later, debutant Biran Mayanja Muluuli capitalized on Mustafa Mujuzi and Joshua Kigozi’s poor defending to guide the ball past Mutakubwa and took the game beyond Kyetume’s reach.
However, the former Kitara forward, had a chance to announce his arrival with a brace in the 83rd minute but unfortunately, his looping header went just meters above the bar after a nice Muwadda cross from the right.
The victory means the Cops are table leaders with 13 points from 6 games while the slaughters remain 7th with 9 points on the table.
What Police FC Coach Abdallah Mubiru said after the game.
“I thank my players for the hard fought win on this rainy day.The boys put up a great performance and worked extra hard for the win. I can’t be moved by the fact that we are table leaders. Our main focus is onto our next game and how to improve our performance game by game.”
