Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert alias Bobi Wine, the National Unity Platform leader, has finally been cleared by the Electoral Commission to be nominated as a presidential candidate.
Paul Bukenya, the acting EC spokesperson Wednesday said in a message that Mr Kyagulanyi is now among the presidential aspirants whose supporters’ signatures had been verified and cleared.
“Please receive the updated list of verified aspirants as at Wednesday, October,28, 2020,”Bukenya said.
Upon receipt of the news, Bobi Wine tweeted thus; “This morning, the Electoral Commission notified us that our signatures for nomination have been verified. Once again, I thank all Ugandans who continue to be part of this journey. Together, we shall build a #NewUganda!
The NUP flag bearer now joins a number of other presidential aspirants including the incumbent and ruling NRM party’s Yoweri Museveni and Independents Henry Tumukunde, Nancy Linda Nakalembe and Fred Mwesigye whose supporters’ signatures have been verified and cleared by the Electoral Commission.
Others are Alliance for National Transformation (ANT)’s Mugisha Muntu, Willy Mayambala, Joseph Kabuleta,John Kalumba and FDC’s Patrick Obi Amuriat.
The aspirants who have been successfully verified and cleared have been issued with certificates of compliance that they will present to the returning office on nomination day.
Section 10(b) of the Presidential Elections Act stipulates that a Presidential candidate’s nomination shall be supported by not less than one hundred (100) persons who are registered voters, from not less than ninety-eight (98) districts, which form two thirds (2/3) of all the districts of Uganda.
Nomination of the aspirants is set for November 2 and 3, 2020, at Kyambogo University Sports Grounds, Kampala. It’s also expected that the polling date will subsequently be announced after the nominations.
The Electoral Commission has consistently maintained that each aspiring candidate shall be allowed into the nomination venue accompanied by not more than ten persons including the candidate so as to observe the Ministry of Health Standard operating Procedures on preventing the spread of Covid-19.
