Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) has announced it has so far verified and cleared supporters of four (4 ) aspiring candidates for the 2021 Presidential Elections.
In a statement posted on its social media handles, the EC said current president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (NRM), Mwesigye Fred (Independent), Tumukunde Henry Kakurugu (Independent) and Kalembe Nancy Linda (Independent) had been cleared for normination.
According to the statement, the verification exercise of supporters of 18 other aspiring candidates who have submitted their lists for consideration is still ongoing.
Section 10(b) of the Presidential Elections Act stipulates that a Presidential candidate’s nomination shall be supported by not less than one hundred (100) persons who are registered voters, from not less than ninety-eight (98) districts, which form two thirds (2/3) of all the districts of Uganda.
Presidential aspirants who successfully pass through the verification sieve shall be issued with a Certificate which they will present to the Returning Officer on nomination day.
The Electoral Commission (EC) had given two weeks to the over 80 presidential aspirants to gather at least 100 signatures from about 98 districts if they were to quantify for norminations.
However, the Commission says it has so far only received 22 aspirants who had submitted their supporters for verification.
Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) flag bearer party President Patrick Amuriat Oboi and Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert who is standing on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, are the notable names whose supporters are yet to be verified.
The presidential nominations, the EC announced will be conducted on November 2 and 3, 2020.
