Fufa commits two under age teams to Afcon qualifiers

AFCON U20 Qualifiers:  22nd November – 6th December 2020 (Tanzania)

AFCON U17 Qualifiers: 13th  December – 28th December 2020 (Rwanda)

Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed registration of two under age teams in Cecafa competitions.

A statement from the federation secretariat said in part ; “FUFA has registered two under age National teams (U17 and U20) for the AFCON Zonal Qualifiers (CECAFA).”


This follows a CECAFA Executive Committee meeting held in Arusha on Saturday 10th October 2020 that decided that both the U17 and U20 AFCON Qualifiers would be held in 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

The committee awarded Tanzania the hosting rights of the AFCON U-20 qualifiers.
And the tournament will be held between 22nd November to 6th December 2020.

On the other hand, the AFCON U-17 qualifiers will take place between 13th to 28th December 2020 in Rwanda.

The confirmed countries for AFCON U-20 qualifiers are; defending champions and hosts Tanzania,  Kenya, Somalia, Burundi, Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti and Ethiopia.

For the AFCON U-17 qualifiers confirmed countries are; Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya.

It’s expected that both Qualifier Tournaments will feature 10 teams which will be in two pools.

After the pool stages, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals.

The draw for the tournament will be conducted virtually on a date yet to be announced by the secretariat.

“CECAFA is well aware of the restrictions in different member countries as far as social gatherings, travel and medical preparedness is concerned. The host countries should therefore give the necessary assurances to the participating teams on their wellbeing and precautions around COVID – 19,”  Auka Gecheo,  CECAFA Executive Director said in a statement.
