Kawempe North Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Latif Ssebagala will contest for the Kampala City Lord Mayoral seat on the National Unity Platform ticket, the party’s vetting committee has decided.

The committee picked Mr Sebaggala over singer Joseph Mayanja alias Dr. Jose Chameleon.

The two were vetted last week to vie for the Kampala’s hot seat which is currently occupied by the FDC flag bearer Mr Erias Lukwago.

However impeccable sources within the NUP say Chameleon was dropped after failing to present appropriate academic qualifications which are necessary for nomination by Uganda’s Independent Electoral Commission.

It’s alleged that Mr. Mayanja presented questionable A level credentials and when the team tasked him to produce his O level certifications, he failed.

Also, some media reports have alleged NUP officials said that Chameleon did not have a national identity card.

The singer reportedly claimed that he had given it to the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) to change his name, an argument the vetting committee deemed un convincing.

On Sunday 20, NUP released the list for all flag bearers across the country who will be vying for various positions at village, parish, municipality and city levels especially in Kampala.

Although the party communication department was yet to comment on the matter, the Electoral Management Committee chairperson, Ms Mercy Walukamba said aggrieved aspirants are free to appeal before closure of business on Sunday.

“All aggrieved persons may lodge appeals to the Election Management Committee by dropping them off at the Central Region office located in Lubaga, Kampala. All appeals must be lodged in by September 20, 2020 at 4pm and must state specific grounds on which the appeal is premised,” she said in a statement accompanying the provisional list of candidates.

Mr. Mayanja is yet to react on the decision but we’re working tooth and nail to get his response.
