Soldier killed as army exchanges fire with prison breakers

A yet to be identified Uganda People’s Defense Forces officer has been confirmed dead after un specified number of prisoners disarmed prison warders and broke out of Moroto Government Prison in Moroto district.

The army spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso confirmed the incident adding that the officer died from gun wounds sustained during an exchange of fire between the escapees and a joint team of UPDF and Uganda Police.

“The inmates overpowered the warder and broke into the armory and escaped with guns. But when communication was made, a team of joint security forces responded and the search is still going on until we’re able to get them back,” the army spokesperson told CBS FM.

Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso said security was using helicopter in the pursuit of the criminals who had run into the nearby hills but later resorted to foot search due to  darkness caused by night time.

Reports indicate the incident happened at around 4.30pm.

This website has also learnt that most of the prisoners who escaped are hard core criminals, majorly warriors who were arrested and appeared before the Division Court martial.

As a result of the man hunt for escapees by Police, army and Prison warders residents say business in Moroto Municipality was brought to a standstill.

Residents had been watching in shock as the search went on but by the time the sun went to ‘sleep’, none had been re-captured.
