Local Defense Units (LDUs) are officially back into action after spending some time off the streets of Kampala Metropolitan policing area. This is after the Uganda Defense Forces (UPDF) decided to re-engage the force many a Ugandans have continuously deemed brutal.
In a statement signed by spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso, the Updf said Tuesday Morning that local leadership and members of the public have been petitioning the authorities for the return of the LDU to combat crime especially at night.
Gen Byekwaso however said the LDUs will resume operations but only at night and shall also participate in intelligence led operations.
The unit was withdrawn to undergo refresher training which has been ongoing for some time in Kakiri.
“The LDU shall not participate in day time enforcement of Ministry of Health Covid-19 prevention guidelines,” part of the statement says.
Updf has also urged the public to cooperate with the LDU officers.
